Cinco de Mayo tips
Question
Do you know of any fun activities for kids that also teach them about the history of Cinco de Mayo?
Ingrid's Answer
Specific to Cinco de Mayo, there are no related games in Mexico. But something that could be fun and adapted is to do a type of Simon Says game, but instead of calling it Simon, call it Benito Juarez. Benito Juarez was a Zapotec Indian who was born and raised in extreme poverty. With lots of hard work and determination, and love for his country, he became president of Mexico. He defeated the French who had occupied the country for 5 years. The battle of Pueblo is essentially when the Mexicans defeated the French. That's why it's called Cinco de Mayo; it's the date the battle took place. That was in Pueblo, Mexico. So, perhaps you can adapt some of the games you already know with your kids and play a type of Simon Says but with Benito Juarez.
Question
Since we're having an outdoor party, I won't have access to an oven. Do you have ideas for food that doesn't need to be heated for Cinco de Mayo?
Ingrid's Answer
Guacamole dips, taco salads, bean dip, salsa—to name a few. Decorate with some pepitas (pumpkin seeds)—that immediately gives it a gourmet look. You can toast your pepitas in advance if you want them to be even more fragrant.
Question
I'm going to a friend's Cinco de Mayo party. What should I bring as a hostess gift?
Ingrid's Answer
Something like a basket of chili sauce or different Mexican spices. Perhaps you want to stick in a bottle of tequila. Those are always welcome at parties.
